The GRRRLS ROCK Herstory:

GRRRLS ROCK is a project developed by two Evergreen State College students Hava Aviv and Mindy Bergen.  These two hair-raising riot grrrl single mama’s intended to engage the female youth of the Pacific Northwest. They began in the fall of 2005 with a tour of 7 female musicians from Eugene, Oregon to Vancouver, BC, Canada. They hit nine cities total and threw 11 shows.  In Olympia, a special three day fest included all the traveling musicians as well as local bands from LA, Seattle, Olympia and Portland.  All of the bands had at least one female member and some were comprised of all grrrls. Each show was free to the public to include all classes.  There were no drugs or alcohol at any of the shows so that it was a safe place for the youth to be that did not promote drug and alcohol use in order to appreciate music, girls and fun.  The intent was to show that in the male dominated music industry us grrrls can rock and there are plenty of us out there!

The GRRRLS ROCK Future:

GRRRLS ROCK will be holding an under 21 girls youth group in the spring that will explore politics, environmental issues, youth issues and other important topics through expressive arts workshops and seminars. We will obtain the girls through Community Youth Services (a non-profit organization offering outreach, social services, foster care and education to the youth-at-risk of Thurston County) and within the Olympia, Tumwater and North Thurston School districts.

Our hope is that the concentrated and creative involvement with each girl will encourage her to continue her self-discovery, to build interpersonal communication skills and to gain political awareness.  We will encourage each girl to become an active member within her community.  As the girls find the strength of their own voice they will inspire their peers to be involved individuals and community members.

With the proceeds from the fundraisers, the girls will be able to have art supplies for activities such as painting, drawing and silk screening during the weekly meetings.  When the group has concluded they will be able to take these supplies home with them so they can continue to practice all of the skills they have learned.
